Imagine the shock and disgust of students and teachers of the Saraswat Primary School
when they showed up for the new school term on Monday morning only to be greeted with graffiti-covered walls bearing indecent language and perverse images. The persons had used spray paint to apply the graffiti.
The school is located in the village of De Willem, West Coast Demerara.
Teachers of the school had been cleaning classrooms on Sunday and had left the school shortly after midday. The school is reportedly guarded only at nights and some persons believe that the culprits may have sneaked into the building sometime during Sunday afternoon and did their mischief.
A source close to the school told Kaieteur News that the dastardly act may have been done by several unemployed young men in the village who are known marijuana smokers. Others called on the police to round up persons and question them in a bid to find out the culprits behind the defacing of the school.
The matter was reported to Regional Education Officer Dennis Jaikarran, and he is now attempting to get some paint, as persons from the community have volunteered to repaint the defaced walls.
One parent is of the opinion that the school needs to be guarded during the day and not only at night.
Defacing of schools seems to be a norm on the West Coast of Demerara as it was only last term that the Zeeburg Secondary School was also treated in a similar fashion.
