The New Amsterdam Warriors showed no mercy to the hapless new comers Guyana Humanitarian Development Centre (GHDC), pounding them into submission when play continued in the A. Ally and Son’s First division Basketball competition for teams in Berbice with one game.
The Warriors came prepared for battle even as they were playing in unfamiliar environment in the game which was played on Sunday at the GHDC court. They made their host really uncomfortable as they took charge from the start to come out 71-36 winners.
The Warriors were in a different class from their opponents as they executed well with some smooth and sometimes bullish play. By the time the first session ended the score was 17-6.
With pressure being added in the second quarter the Warriors were finding it easier as they ended the first half with a 14 points lead at 32-18.
At the start of the second half the sharp Warriors continued to press, pouring in 22 points to the host 2. The segment ended 54-20.
The Warriors showed no mercy as they continued to pour in baskets at will. Even as the GHDC made a game of it they were happy to hear the final whistle as the Warriors bucketed another 17 points to the GHDC 16 for the 71-36 blowout.
Leading the board for the winning New Amsterdam Warriors were Shamiar France with a game high 23 with support coming from Quesi Mickle 21 and Shamar Halley 17.
For the GHDC team Bobby Tashir scored 17 with Carl Hooper 10 and David Gomes 8.
The competition is expected to continue on Sunday with Rose Hall Town Jammers being at home to New Amsterdam Warriors at the Rose Hall Town Court in a game postponed from last week in what is expected to be a tough affair. Tip-off is 16:00 hrs.
Cash, trophies and other incentives will be presented to the top three teams with the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and other outstanding individual performers also being rewarded.
The coordinator is Vibert Garrett. (Samuel Whyte)
