The Guyana Defence Force chances of retaining the Lennox Blackmoore National Intermediate boxing
title just became tougher as nemesis the Republican Gym announced that a team of 20 fighters would be representing the Guyana Prisons when the tournament punches off on Friday at the National Gymnasium.
The team from Camp and Durban Streets would be led by middleweight Geraldo Phillips and is coached by Adrian Thomas and Dexter Marques. Included is Joshua Joseph who won Best Boxer in the July’s Andrew Lewis National Novice Championship.
The prisoners won the title in 2014 after surprising the Guyana Defence Force at the East Ruimveldt Community Centre Ground (California Square). The Republicans were then coached by Wincell ‘Nacker’ Thomas and literally roughed up the soldiers in every department inside the ring to earn the coveted title.
However, the GDF, coached by Guyana’s first AIBA certified Three Star Coach Terrence ‘Cool’ Poole was able to wrestle the title back last year. Word from the Republican Camp state unequivocally that it would be a return to California Square days and GDF would be dethroned.
The Republicans have been turning in excellent performances which many have attributed to the support given by Prison Director Carl Graham. The National Intermediate is scheduled to have over eight gyms from across the country participating.
The three-day tournament, organised by the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association would see over 70 boxers in action. It concludes on Sunday and precedes the Terrence Alli National Open, to be held in November.
