A smash-up between two heavy duty trucks early yesterday morning claimed the life of
truck porter Dhanraj Dataram and left truck driver, Munir Mohamed with a broken leg.
Dataram and Mohamed were reportedly on their way south along the East Bank Demerara highway in the vicinity of the Providence Stadium when tragedy struck at around 04:30hrs.
According to a relative of Mohamed, another heavy duty truck belonging to a West Demerara businessman, was carrying a load of cement when the driver overtook Mohamed and suddenly slowed down directly in his path.
The sudden deceleration by the driver caused Mohamed to slam into the back of the laden truck. The collision severely damaged the cabin of Mohamed’s truck and as a result the porter was severely injured and trapped. There was no significant damage to the other vehicle.
The other truck driver is said to have escaped the accident without injury, while Mohamed’s leg was trapped in the twisted steel of the truck he was driving. It took public spirited citizens a little over an hour to free Dataram from the wreckage.
Dataram and Mohamed were rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where Dataram was pronounced dead on arrival.
