– West Dem. Road Safety Assoc.
As the new school term begins, the West Demerara Road Safety Association is pleading with commuters to
raise their voices against drivers of public transportation when they breach the various speed limits.
Chairman of the Association, Owen Trotz, told Kaieteur News that he is not only pleading with residents of the West Demerara region, but to all Guyanese. “We are concerned about road safety on the West Demerara, but being part of the National Road Safety Council in Georgetown, we’re concerned with road safety throughout Guyana.”
He said that persons are usually afraid to speak up, fearing they would be victimized by the minibus and hire car operators. However, in the name of doing what is right, Trotz is calling on persons to use their voices to effect change.
Additionally, Trotz is calling on drivers in the West Demerara region to cooperate with the traffic ranks for a smooth flow of traffic, particularly in the Vreed-en-Hoop area which is plagued by daily traffic congestion.
Trotz also identified other areas where drivers should pay keen attention, since there will be added traffic on the road due to the resumption of school. The areas are Parika, Uitvlugt, Den Amstel and Hague, where road and drainage construction is currently ongoing.
According to the Chairman, his organisation had conducted talks with ranks of the West Coast Demerara Traffic Department concerning the congestion which usually occurs at the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
Trotz, who is a retired Senior Police Superintendent, said that his entity plans to continue partnering with the police at these congested areas. On the issue of road fatalities, the Chairman said that his organisation’s plan to reduce accidents is through informing the public by conducting road talks and seminars.
