Seventeen trainees are now equipped with craft certificate in electrical or mechanical studies from an accredited technical school, after undergoing studies offered via the Machinery Corporation of Guyana Limited (MACORP).
The company recently celebrated the achievement at its Providence, East Bank Demerara location.
“Trainees were exposed to a comprehensive mechanical curriculum including engine, power train, hydraulics, electrical, and electronic. Additionally they were taught about the importance of having soft skills such as effective communication, inter-personal skills and conflict resolution through teaching and learning methodology with focal emphasis on competency base training.”
The best graduating students included Daniel Salik, Javid Basdeo and Triston Grimmond.
Salik explained that he had a desire to be a mechanic at an early age. He said that he always had an interest in heavy equipment maintenance.
“After attending ETI (Essequibo Technical Institute) I was encouraged to be a part of this training programme and now I am the top performer of this platform as well as a Certified Caterpillar Technician.”
This new batch is expected to improve the dimensions of Macorp’s technical labour force and advance the technological values of Guyana’s industrial sector while maintaining a high level of discipline, knowledge and skills. They were encouraged to live MACORP’s core values of excellence, commitment, respect, collaboration, accountability and integrity.
The technical programme started in 1998 with the aim of equipping technicians with special skills to service Caterpillar heavy duty equipment and machinery while developing talented young Guyanese to ensure a consistent level of superior results and quality in the delivery of Macorp’s customer service.
Over the years, Macorp has trained more than 100 technicians (in an individualized environment) towards ensuring quality; owing to the constant upgrades and the uniqueness of Caterpillar machine and its technology.
The company promises to continue playing an essential role in the country’s development; contributing directly with technical support and supply of equipment to related sectors – mining, agriculture, road construction, basic industry, marine, forestry and electrical power generation.
