Detectives probing the murder of 76-year-old David Ramkissoon, who was found with his throat slit in his Better Hope, East Coast Demerara (ECD) home three Sundays ago, are convinced that they have his killer in their sight.
But they need a DNA match to confirm their suspicions, and getting that is easier said than done.
That DNA test will cost taxpayers approximately $1M, and getting Cabinet’s blessing to access this cash can be challenging at times.
Kaieteur News understands that additional time was requested from the court to detain the prime suspect, but he was eventually released on station bail.
Ramkissoon’s body was discovered in his living room with his throat slit around 17:30 hrs on August 21.
The pensioner was the only one at home at the time of the murder. His son and several persons were held but they were subsequently released.
Kaieteur News understands that detectives who visited the scene on the day of the murder saw footprints in the mud at the back of the pensioner’s yard, leading to an alleyway.
Along with the footprints, they spotted drops of blood that led straight to a shack located a short distance from the slain man’s home.
The occupant of that shack was taken into custody after blood was found in his home.
Investigators also reportedly found blood under the suspect’s nails. On being questioned, he reportedly gave different versions of his movements on the day the pensioner was killed.
If the blood found under the suspect’s nails match that of the victim, then detectives will know for sure that they have the right man.
The suspect is someone who is known to Ramkissoon’s relatives and he was aware that the victim’s family would be out for the day.
Neighbours said that just after the pensioner’s son and his family left to go to a creek on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway, pensioner David Ramkissoon went to a nearby shop. He reportedly failed to lock his door, and it is suspected that the killer sneaked inside.
“Perhaps, while rummaging through the house, the victim went home and confronted him and that’s how he (Ramkissoon) was killed,” a rank opined.
The investigators who are working on this case are hoping that the DNA test can be done as soon as possible so that the case can be closed.
