No other Suriname basketball club visited Guyana more often in the late sixties and early seventies than De Arend Basketball Club, although Yellow Birds were the pacesetters in 1966. De Arend basketballers visited the land of
many waters in 1967, 1972, 1974 and 1984. During De Arend tour of Guyana in 1972, the Dutchmen were led by Guyanese National Player Walter Murray. Today, Kaieteur Sports and Statistician Charwayne Walker take a look at De Arend visits to Guyana in 1972 and 1974.
In 1972 the tourist started their campaign with a commanding 62 to 48 pts victory against Bristol Celtics at Burnham’s Court. Suriname’s National Player Joseph Chilius top scored with 18 pts, Hosar Godfried 13, Oliver Kampen 11 pts. For Bristol Celtics: James ‘Bumpy’ Devonish top scored with 18 pts, Aubrey Williams 13 pts.
Vs Ravens at Burnham Court, De Arend lost 48 to 44. Hewley Henry led all scorers with 20 pts, Clyde ‘Wholly’ Forde 11 pts. For De Arend R. Chilius top scored with 15 pts, his brother Joseph Chilius had 14 pts.
Vs Linden at Mackenzie Sports Club, De Arend won 37 to 32. For De Arend Joseph Chilius scored 12 pts, Oliver Kampen 10 pts. For Linden, Howard Ceasar had 10 pts and Gavin Kendall 11 pts.
Vs Eagles at Burnham Court, Eagles won 42 to 20. Merton Fitzalbert had a game high 14 pts, Winston ‘Boy Blue’ Joseph 11 pts and Mike Brusche 10 pts, while for De Arend, Joseph Chilius 8 pts and Hosar Godfried 8 pts.
1974 Visit Vs Bristol Celtics at Burnham’s Court, De Arend won 48 to 18. For the victors, Suriname’s national player Oliver Kampen top scored with 20 pts, Gerald Pang-A-Tjok had 11 pts. For Bristol Celtics Neville ‘Mice’ Wiltshire and Aubrey Williams scored 6 pts each.
Vs Linden at Mackenzie Sports Club, De Arend won 73 to 34. H. Wilgen top scored with 18 pts, Oliver Kampen 17 pts, Gerald Pang- A- Tjok 16 pts. Keith Alexander top scored for Linden with 12 pts.
Vs Eagles at Burnham’s Court, Eagles won 26 to 21. For Eagles Mike Brusche top scored with 12 pts, Oliver Kampen with 8pts was the leading scorer for De Arend.
Vs Ravens at Burnham Court, De Arend won 55 to 38. Gerald Pang- A- Tjok scored 18 pts, Oliver Kampen 17 pts. For Ravens: Aubrey Chalmers 12 pts, skipper Phillip Daniels 10 pts. De Arend’s clash with Matouk Royals was abandon because of rain at Burnham’s Court. De Arend were ahead 34 to 12.
