East Coast Demerara were 20 runs adrift of Upper Corentyne first innings score of
149 when stumps were drawn on the first day of their second round game in the Guyana Cricket Board Jaguars three-day league which commenced yesterday.
Upper Corentyne were sent packing for 149 in the second session after they were inserted on an Enterprise pitch which kept low at times. Pacer Paul Wintz bowled an impressive spell early on to help reduce the visitors to 29-4 after the start of play was delayed by half hour due to rain. Assad Fudadin and Jason Sinclair added 29 for the first wicket before Wintz removed Sinclair for 10. Off-spinner Vivan Albert then had Fudadin caught for 18 and sent back Joshua Ramsammy without scoring, while Wintz accounted for Troy Gonsalves (00) to leave Upper Corentyne in trouble. Anthony Bramble and Arif Chan featured in a fifth-wicket stand of 43, but left arm seamer Gavin Moriah ended their resistance when he had Bramble, who struck two fours and two sixes, caught for 30. Leg spinner Amir Khan then removed Chan for 19 before Clinton Pestano was run out for 23 (3×4, 1×6). However, Keon Sinclair saved his team further blushes as he clobbered four fours and two sixes in an unbeaten 36; Wintz had 2-20, Khan 2-21 and Albert 2-33.
In reply East Coast lost Gavin Boodwah (00) and Chanderpaul Hemraj (04) to be at 19-2 before Kamesh Yadram and Bhaskar Yadram steadied the innings fairly, taking the score to 73. The siblings looked almost untroubled as they rotated the strike nicely before Bhaskar,
who hit a six over mid-wicket, was lbw to Eon Hooper to a ball that kept low for 26. Kamesh Yadram played fluently, but just as he appeared set for a half century he too was lbw to Hooper for 44 with six boundaries. Ramnarine Chatura (00) was caught at short mid-wicket off Shawn Pereira who also trapped Albert (00), leaving the score at 102-6 as 16 wickets tumble on day one. But Rajendra Chandrika and Khan saw their team to the close without further hiccups as they ended on 129. Chandrika, who struck three fours, is on 31, while Khan is on 14.
Hooper has 3-21 and Pereira 2-15. Play starts at 09:30 hrs today.
