As the police continue to push new initiatives in the quest to do things differently, especially in Berbice, another youth and sports club has been formed.
This time the spotlight is on Ithaca on the West Bank of Berbice. Recently Divisional Commander of the Berbice B Division, Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam and a number of ranks travelled to the area to launch the Youth and Sports group.
The initiative came about after it was observed that there is a need for more recreational and organised activities for the youths in the area. A number of whom it seems would not have much to do. According to the police it is a known adage that “the devil finds work for idle hands to do”.
It was also noted that in June last, residents of the area had called on Mrs. Sita Nagamootoo, wife of Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo to assist them in getting more facilities in place including their Cultural Centre which was in a deplorable condition. The center with facilities to showcase folklore dance and songs was commissioned in 1996.
The residents had expressed the concern that the youths in the community need some place to learn a skill. They had lamented that the non-functioning cultural centre is hampering the development of talent in the community especially among the youths.
The residents had also raised several other issues including, the need for street lights. There was also a call to establish a school feeding programme for the students. “We have students who want to be at school, they are here in the morning and then they do not return in the afternoon because of whatever circumstances at home.”
Armed with this information the Police under Commander Amsterdam and Second in Command Superintendent Edmond Cooper have moved in and taken the initiative to form a youth and sports group in the community.
According to Amsterdam as is widely known by now the police is implementing a number of initiatives which will definitely work well with the community needs.
The police are presently working with the community to see their needs and implement programmes to suit the needs of the community.
The youths will also be involved in all types of sports and games and gear and equipment will be presented shortly.
