The Smythfield Rockers steady themselves early and then applied intense pressure before softening the Ithaca Hardliners to record a 79 -41 victory when play continued in the A. Ally and Son’s First Division Basketball
competition for teams in Berbice with one game on Sunday at the Ithaca basketball Court.
Showing no signs of playing in unfamiliar environment, the Smythfield Rockers were classy and smooth in their execution. After some initial resistance from their opponents the Rockers came through to end the first session 12-7.
With pressure being added in the second quarter the Rockers were finding it easier as they ended the first half with a 14 point lead at 37-23.
There was no reprieve for the hapless Hardliners at the start of the third stanza with the Rockers taking a 17 points lead to end that segment with the score at 50-33.
By the time the last quarter began it was all over bar the shouting with Rockers taking full advantage with their superior play. Rockers were unstoppable as the poured in 29 points to the Hardliners 8 with the Rockers sealing the game as run-away winners 79 points to 41.
Leading the way for the Smythfield Rockers was Gladwin Cort with a game high 27 points, with Jamal Felix supporting well with 23 points, while Tyrone Dey scored 14.
For the Ithaca Hardliners, Kester Sinclair scored 11 with Royan Solomon 7 and Elroy Amsterdam 6 supporting.
The six teams competition is expected to continue on Sunday with New Amsterdam Warriors facing the Guyana Human Development Centre of Corentyne (GHDC) starting at 16:00 hrs at Tain Basketball Court.
The teams are divided into two groups, with group ‘A’ comprising of Smithfield Rockers, Fyrish Black Sharks and Ithaca Hardliners of West Berbice.
The teams making up group B are Rose Hall Town Jammers, Guyana Human Development Centre of Corentyne and New Amsterdam Warriors.
Cash, trophies and other incentives will be presented to the top three teams with the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and other outstanding individual performers also being rewarded.
