Policemen who operate mini-buses while on duty are flouting the law, and Traffic Chief Dion Moore has vowed to take disciplinary action against these ranks very soon.
The crackdown comes in the wake of Saturday night’s tragedy in which a police constable driving a bus slammed into a post in Regent Street, causing the death of one passenger and injury to several others.
“There will be a certain course of action very soon (against policemen operating mini buses), and we will let the policemen in every district know that they should not be driving,” Moore said yesterday.
According to the Traffic Chief, while police ranks may be licensed to drive buses, they are not authorized to operate buses and other vehicles for public transport.
They may, however, be exempted in they are on leave or if they have been interdicted.
The Traffic Chief confirmed that Police Constable Timothy Horatio, who was at the wheel at the time of the tragedy, was not granted permission to operate a minibus.
Horatio, 26, is reportedly attached to the Force’s Communications Department. He has been detained at the Alberttown Police Station and is likely to be charged.
Sources within the Force said yesterday that several police ranks “have buses on the road.”
One source said that these ranks and their drivers are often the ones who use the roadways in a reckless manner, without fear of being charged.

What is “a certain course of action” … that is so lame … why not say “will be fired” … your pronouncement has no teeth … just like the course of action about vehicles with heavily tinted windows …
