Angoy’s Avenue the beneficiary this time
The B division of the Guyana Police Force and more so the Central Police station continues with its community outreach initiative with the formation of another youth and sports group in the area as it leads the way in the Guyana Police Force, community and Police outreach programme and enhancement drive.
According to officer in charge of police No One Sub division in Berbice (New Amsterdam, Canje, East Bank and East Coast) Deputy Superintendent Guy Nurse, Youth Clubs were established at Angoy’s Avenue (cow Dam) in the New Amsterdam area.
The police in their ongoing effort to serve the community better have already undertaken some new initiatives and projects which have been enhancing the police community relationship.
According to Nurse there are a number of reasons why the youth clubs were formed and among them are to take youths off the street and instill discipline in them. He stated that society nowadays is plagued with a lot of Social and other ills and the police force is bent on playing its part. The initiative he hoped will help to reduce crime in the areas, stating that it all comes with the paradigm that the police force must do things different.
Nurse along with Station Sergeant of the Central Police Station Marlon O’Donoghue along with Community Relations Officer of the Central Police Station Female Constable Stacey Brutus along with other ranks visited the area where they interacted with those in attendance.
The meeting was held at the Mount Sinai Nursery School in the area and caters for youths mostly from the Timmers Dam area. The Angoy’s Avenue group is one of the largest to be established so far with over 35 members for the start. It is envisage that more youth groups will be established in the sprawling Angoy’s Avenue area.
Female Police Constable Stacey Brutus, who is the Community Relations Officer of the Central Police Station, is the persons in charge of the functioning of the group.
According to Brutus the aims and objectives of the group is to create a safe, clean and secure environment that is functional at all times. To provide resources including educational and recreational to those in need. Develop capacity building programmes for youths and adults and to make activities available for the teens that would help to build their self-esteem.
The Community outreach activities in Berbice are being spearheaded by Divisional Commander Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam and Second in Charge Superintendent Edmond Cooper.
During the year a number of youth clubs have been formed or resuscitated in Berbice, while a number of joint Community Projects have also been under taken. (Samuel Whyte)
