– two boat operators in custody
A search party scouring the Waini River has recovered the bodies of seven-year-old Lisa Da Silva and her six-year-old brother, Davenand Da Silva, who perished when a speeding boat slammed into the vessel in which the victims, another sibling, and their parents were travelling on Thursday night.
A resident said that the little girl’s body was found at around 19.00 hrs yesterday, some six miles from the scene of the mishap. Her brother’s body was recovered about an hour later. The remains were taken to the Mabaruma Hospital mortuary.
The search party included the children’s father, Basil Da Silva. Their mother sustained injuries during the crash and is being treated at the Mabaruma Hospital.
Kaieteur News understands that part of the wrecked boat as well as its outboard engine, has been found.
Meanwhile, a senior police official disclosed that ranks from ‘F’ Division have detained two boat operators, as they seek to identify the individual who is responsible for the mishap. The official said that investigators have no information that suggests that the boatman tried to assist the family.
A member of the search party said that one of the detained boat operators has a 200-horsepower engine. The source said that the boatman is the only operator who was traversing that section of the Waini River where the mishap occurred.
Kaieteur News was also told that the man’s vessel had suffered some damage.
According to reports, Basil Da Silva, 49, his reputed wife, Celina James, 47, their 10-year-old son, Dwayne Da Silva, and Lisa and Davenand, were heading home in their wooden boat at around 21.30 hrs on Thursday after a fishing trip, when another vessel, travelling at a fast rate, slammed their boat from behind.
The family was hurled into the river. Both parents and the 10-year-old managed to swim ashore, but the two smaller children could not be found.
The tragedy is one of several river mishaps that have occurred in recent months.
