East Bank Demerara closed the second and penultimate day on 68-5, leading by 74 runs batting
a second time against Georgetown when the Guyana Cricket Board Jaguars three-day League continued yesterday at the Everest Cricket Club. Left-hander Sherfene Rutherford is on 12, while skipper Steven Jacobs is on two.
After gaining a first innings lead of six, East Bank quickly lost Ryan Shun caught off left arm seamer Andre Stoll for two and Tevin Imlach lbw to Stoll for one to be at 11-2. Trevon Griffith and Mark Robhe took the score to 42 before Robhe who laboured for 97 minutes and faced 67 balls was bowled by Kellon Carmichael for seven. The left-handed Griffith hardly put a foot wrong until he offered off-spinner Gajnanan Suknanan a return catch after he had struck three fours and one six in scoring 36 off 77 balls with the score on 60. Suknanan then bowled Budhan Baksh without scoring the very next delivery. However, Rutherford and Jacobs saw them to the close without further hiccups. Stoll and Suknanan have so far taken two wickets each and Carmichael one.
Earlier, Georgetown resumed on 65-3 in reply to East Bank first innings 192 and were bowled out for 186 in the second session. Pacer Rutherford provided his team with the breakthrough when he had Christopher Barnwell, who began on 28, caught at the wicket for 31 with only four runs added to the total. Rutherford then induced Ronaldo Alimohamed (00) to nick one through to wicketkeeper Tevin Imlach off the first ball he had faced. But Kwame Crosse and Dexter Solomon consolidated to boost their team somewhat with sensible batting on a complicated pitch.
Crosse who retired hurt when on 24 was eventually stumped off left arm spinner Totoram Bishun for 36. Suknanan was lbw to Baksh for three before Carmichael went for 14 to leave their team at 143-7. While the rest of the batting didn’t offer much support, Solomon batted with confidence to remain unbeaten on 62. He faced 158 balls and hit four fours in 193 minutes. Jacobs finished with 3-29, Rutherford 3-32 and Bishun 2-35. Play starts at 09:30 hrs today.
