The man who was fatally shot in front of the Camp Street Prison, last Friday, has been identified as 24-year-old Shane Scipio, a patient of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC)’s Psychiatric Ward.
Scipio was identified by one of his friends, Simpson Sandwell, at the hospital’s mortuary yesterday.
Sandwell said that his friend’s relatives are not aware of his death as yet, and he has no idea how to locate them.
According to Sandwell, he learnt of Scipio’s death when he read the news.
“I last saw him at Demico (a few days before he was shot) and he was behaving bad, so I put him in a taxi and take him to the hospital, but he left and say he will go when he ready.”
The man added that he was subsequently informed that Scipio returned to hospital the following day and received his treatment. Sandwell said that he did not see or hear from his friend since then.
The police said that Friday night, Scipio went to the Camp Street Prison, at John and Durban Streets, and behaved in a disorderly manner. He reportedly threw down several steel barriers, in the presence of the ranks guarding the perimeter of the prison.
Scipio was taken into custody by ranks of a police patrol, but subsequently returned and continued the said behaviour and actions, in front of the Prison.
According to the police, a TSU rank armed with a service weapon and under the supervision of a subordinate officer approached the suspect (Scipio). The suspect then reportedly attacked the rank, to which he (rank) discharged a round—hitting the suspect to the abdomen.
Scipio was immediately rushed to the GPHC where he eventually succumbed.
