On Friday August 12, 2016, 25 Karatekas, (8) from The Little Diamond Int’l Martial Arts Academy and (17) from The Guyana Mixed Martial Arts Karate Association, as “Team Guyana” left for Suriname poised to compete on Sunday August 14 in the Shuirken Martial Arts School 2ndInternational Martial Arts Tournament. Team Guyana turned in excellent performances winning a total of 59 medals in the traditional and free form katas, Traditional and free from weapon katas, Point sparring and the Full contact fighting.
In the 6 yrs. And under, 7 – 9, 10 – 12, 13 – 15, 16 – 19 and the 20 & over divisions the Two 2nd Dan Instructors of the team, Steven Persaud (The Guyana Mixed Martial Arts Karate Association) won the traditional kata and point sparring, while Parsuram Arjune (The Little Diamond Int’l Martial Arts Academy) won the traditional kata, weapon kata and the full contact fighting, being the highlights of the day. Team Guyana brought home 23 gold, 19 silver and 17 bronze medals.
The Team’s Manager and Coach, 7th Dan Shihan, Abdool Nazim Yassim and 5th Dan, Master Lloyd Ramnarine expressed joy at being able to have the nation’s Flag fly high in Suriname.
Students will now prepare for the Little Diamond Int’l Martial Arts Academy 4th Open International Championship on September 24 & 25, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
After which Team Guyana come together and prepare to travel to Trinidad to compete there. The organisation is hopeful of receiving the necessary assistance from the National Sports Commission.
Shihan Nazim Yassim (manager) and Master Lloyd Ramnarine (Coach) would also like to thank all supporters of Team Guyana that made the trip to Suriname possible and look forward to their continued support.
