One month ago this publication reported on a sunken dredge in the Mazaruni River. According to reports received yesterday the dredge is still sitting in the river and the situation has worsened, since the water level has dropped.
A river-taxi driver plying the route said that the present situation has made it harder for boats to navigate the Piereemap Falls area where the dredge is stuck.
Due to the lower water levels more of the dredge is now exposed to persons traversing the waterway, thereby increasing the possibility of an accident occurring. Moreover, it was reported that a drop in the water level would eventually cause a complete blockage of the route.
The man said that many persons have been tight-lipped about the issue in fear of stepping on the toes of the owner. The dredge belongs to Crown Mining and bears license number SD 3398.
According to reports, the dredge sunk while it was proceeding along the river on its way to Potaro when its base was struck by the rapids of the falls. It was left hanging on its side despite the complaints by boat operators.
Just after this newspaper made the issue public, Minister within the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment, Simona Broomes, initiated a meeting to prepare to address the problem.
Broomes had made the point that the vessel could cost the lives of people using the river. It was expected that the dredge would have been removed within two days. Prior to this publication reporting on the matter, the dredge had been in that area for over a month.
During the meeting with Broomes, Harbour Master Michael Tennet had said that the vessel should not have been anchored in such a dangerous way. He explained that the waterways are supervised by Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) and consequently water dredges fall under that agency.
Broomes had promised to correct the role which MARAD plays in regulating the presence of water-dredges in the river. Currently the entity’s mandate is to promote safety on the nation’s waterways.
