The Police Progressive Youth Club (PPYC) has declared its readiness for battle at the upcoming Boyce & Jefford Track and Field Classic VII with the aim of defending their title, and winning a historic grand prize of $1M for a third consecutive year.
This is according to E-Networks Channel 1 News Room Sport that conducted a recent interview with Police Coach, Lyndon Wilson. Police narrowly edged the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) last year with Wilson pointing out that he expects the soldiers to return with a very competitive team on August 27-28 at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground, Linden.
“Well we expect all the teams to come challenging, once you are a winner their will always be a lot of challengers. Our biggest rival is GDF, because we are the two largest teams. However, we are ready to defend our title,” Wilson declared.
GDF has been on an upsurge recently with some quality athletes and the form of Davin Fraser and Akeem Stewart leading the way. The rivalry of the two armed forces in athletes is decades old and it seems there will be no truce later this month.
Wilson noted that the Police Inter-Division Athletics, which recently concluded, has helped the club prepare better for the Classic. He said that he is aware of all the areas that needs adjustment before his team goes to Linden for the Classic.
“We had our sports a month prior to Boyce/Jefford Classic; we know where our athletes are and where we have to take them, so that is our process right now,” Wilson added, stating that one of the most consistent and dominant clubs will hope to extend its legacy.
“We are a disciplined service. The athletes adhere to instructions and understand what they have to do. We always have the right people for each event; we don’t select our team based on face we select based on performance,” he informed.
Apart from being defending champions, Police are definitely contenders for the $1M prize which is the highest purse on offer in local track and field. In addition, the second place team will take home $500,000 while third and fourth gets $300,000 and $200,000 respectively for a total purse of $2M.
There are also eight international events that carry a total purse of US$500 each with US$250 for the winner, US$150,000 for second place and US$100 for third; the Champion Male and Female will pocket $50,000 each while the Media and Masters races also have a similar $50,000 scheme, which when added to the $800,000 for international events carries the total prize monies to $3M.
Trophies will be given to the top four clubs, while medals will be given to all athletes placing 1-3 and trophies to Champion Male and Female. According to the prizes, this year’s Classic has been earmarked to be the most lucrative in its seven-year history.
Is this oil a blessing or a curse?
