-graduated two weeks ago; was to have turned out to work for first time today
A young policeman who graduated two weeks ago from the Felix Austin Police College
in Georgetown hanged himself yesterday at his home, allegedly after a quarrel with his girlfriend.
Reports are that he was trying to film his suicide on cell phone for his girlfriend to see.
Dead is Sham Kumar Persaud, 18, of 12-18 Chapel Street, New Amsterdam, Berbice and a former student of The Berbice Educational Institute.
His mother, Jasmatie Goberdhan Dhanraj, a nursing assistant attached to the New Amsterdam Hospital, was inconsolable when the media visited her yesterday.
She was being consoled by relatives, colleagues and friends. Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam and some officers were also at the home.
The dead policeman’s brother, Avendra Kumar Persaud, who is also a member of the Guyana Police Force, was in disbelief over his younger brother’s suicide.
The young man who is posted at the Tactical Services Unit, has been a member of the GPF for just over 12 months.
Avendra stated that he encouraged his sibling to join the force for them to assist their mother.
According to Avendra, he made contact with his brother at around 09:00hrs, and it was then that his younger sibling said that he would kill himself.
Avendra said that he tried talking him out of it. That was the last contact the two of them had.
He stated that he later learnt that his brother was having some problems with his girlfriend who recently went overseas.
They had reportedly quarreled because she had her ears pierced.
Avendra said that the girl later related that earlier she and Sham had argued during a video chat.
She told him that Sham turned the video to himself and told her something about” not in this life time” and told her to “look at what he was going to do.”
She then saw him with a rope and the video went off.
His mother stated that she had to care for her three sons since she is a single parent. Her son was initially posted to Black Bush Polder today. However he had complained to her that the area is too isolated. She made representation on his behalf and he was reassigned to Blairmont to be closer to home.
The woman said that her son jokingly told her that from Monday she must not go to work late or else he himself would lock her up, since she often went to work late, while taking care of her children.
She said that she left him at home sleeping and went to work. She returned home around 15:30 hrs and did some chores, little suspecting that anything was amiss.
After a while she decided to check in his room and it was then that she saw her son hanging from a rafter in the roof with his knees on the bed.
Her screams brought neighbours running to her house.
A cousin related that Sham had told him that he was having regular quarrels with his girlfriend and had threatened to take his own life.
Divisional Commander of Berbice B Divisional Commander, Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam, along with Woman Inspector Yonette Stephen and Pastor Wesley La Fleur of the Cops and Faith organisation in Berbice, visited the family..
It is the second tragedy to befall the family in the past three months.
The eldest brother, Chandra Kumar Persaud has been missing since May. He was also a recruit in the Guyana Police Force and left the training school suddenly. He has not been seen or heard from since.
