Over 20 villages confirmed for historic sporting championships
The 2016 North Pakarimas August Fiesta will get underway with an official launch on Wednesday 10th August in Kopinang. The inaugural sporting championships which caters for villages in Region 8 will see some 20 odd villages competing in five sporting disciplines within the categories. The games which is organised by the North Pakarimas Sport and Culture Association is being executed in collaboration with CDC and Minister of State Joe Harmon.
The ten day event gets underway on August 10 and concludes on August 20 and will see competition in Male and Female football, male and female cricket, female volleyball, male and female archery and road races. Some 820 athletes are expected to compete over the ten days with each village competing to be dubbed as the Champion village of Region 8. It was disclosed that the three villages of Campbelltown, Microbi and Princeville of Mahdia will send a combined delegation due to the high cost of airfare for three teams to the games.
It was disclosed that Kopinang will host the inaugural championships with the venue being rotated every year. The villages are expected to walk with their supporters to witness the eagerly anticipated championships, which will also see residents competing in a Pirari competition. The competitions will run during the day while at nights cultural activities will be held. A number of Toshaos have already confirmed that a number of villagers will accompany the athletes to Kopinang. The organisers disclosed that owing to the distance of several villages a number of teams have already begun walking as all participating teams are expected on Tuesday for the Wednesday 11am opening ceremony.
It was noted that this event was birthed after a discussion with Minister Harmon in soliciting his hep to enhance sports and youth development in region eight. It was pointed out that the North Pakarimas has been starving for events like these for a number of years. This, they noted is a as a result of the communities there not having opportunities of coming together with the view of competing in several sporting disciplines.
It was disclosed that the North Pakarimas August Fiesta will be an annual event. Minister Harmon will be delivering the feature address, while Minister Sydney Allicock and Valarie Lowe are expected to also grace the opening ceremony. Popular broadcaster Bobby Vieira will MC the programme.
It was pointed out that Regional Executive officer (REO) of region 8, Rafel Downes has thrown the regions support behind the event, noting that it comes at a time when a number of youths are at home. He stated that having such an event will help significantly in bringing the villagers together while enhancing community development. “I am happy that the organisers have conceptualised such an event as it argues well for sports and youth development in region eight,” he said.
National Director of CDC Eugene Gilbert stressed that the Community Development Councils thought it fitting to collaborate on an event that evidently will help in pushing the development of the various communities.
The organisers disclosed that sponsorship has been very challenging due to the fact that many businesses indicated that the location is one that will not bring ready economic returns to them. Kevin Gildharie who is one of the organisers stressed that they have been aggressively seeking sponsorship, stressing that there continues to be some challenges. However, he was very high in praises for a number of agencies and companies who have boldly endorsed the event thus readily agreeing to lend sponsorship support. He pointed out that BK International has led the way with significant support followed by Regal Stationaries. The National Sports Commission, the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples Affairs, CDC, Minister Joe Harmon are also on board, while Mahdia Businessman Roger Hinds along with Global Seafood Distributors and Sanchez are the other sponsors.
The organisers pointed out that while they are still in need of support to successfully pull off the event, they are hoping that during the course of the week a number of businesses that they have approached will positively respond.
