It is the duty of the citizenry to ensure that the Government is held accountable, especially after the
election period. And it is upon this very salient point that Executive Member of the Working People’s Alliance (WPA), Dr. David Hinds told Afro-Guyanese yesterday that they must demand value for their votes.
Dr. Hinds made these comments, among others, during the Fourth Annual State of the African Guyanese Forum which was held at the Critchlow Labour College.
“If you vote for a government you have a duty to direct it… We have got to be in advocacy mode…The way government works is that during elections time, it comes and it tells you a lot of things but in between elections, you have got to make that government do something; you’ve got to make sure that it works.”
The University Professor shared with his attentive audience that often he has been criticized for making certain comments on the actions of the Government. He said that in some instances, his opinions however brutally honest they may be are seen as an attack on the administration.
Dr. Hinds said that he is not against but rather for the coalition government. The politician stressed that it is because he is interested in the survival of the Government that he sometimes engages in the exercise of “tough love.”
The WPA Executive Member made it clear that citizens have a right to hold the Government to a high standard and as such, emphasized that this cannot be done by trying to paint the false impression that everything is 100 percent perfect every second of the day. He said that only opportunities for growth can come from extending “tough love” to the Government.
Additionally, Dr. Hinds said that if he alone speaks about the shortcomings of the Government then he may be deemed as attacker.
“But we have to unite our voices for the greater good of the nation and we have to say our votes meant something, our votes are worth something and value something and we have to get value of our votes…We have to ensure that we get policies that will help our communities directly and indirectly.”
Turning his attention to the procurement sector, the WPA Executive Member commented that the last 23 years were certainly instructive. He said that the previous Government ensured in an uneven way and in some instances illegally, that their supporters were uplifted as far as business was concerned.
Dr. Hinds said that there is a need to change the lax procurement systems in Guyana. He opined too that only “a few big contractors” get most of the contracts as well.
“It happened then and it continues to happen,” he added.
The WPA Executive Member then called on Government to take affirmative action in this area. He insisted that contracts need to be given to the small and medium sized contractors.
