Team Evolution’s Raul Leal lead home two other teammates to cop the top spot in a shortened 12th Annual Regan Rodrigues Memorial Cycle Road Race yesterday on the West Demerara, sponsored by Ricks and Sari Agro Industries Limited.
As a result of ongoing road works on the West Demerara organizers and riders had to reduce the distance of the race which normally turns back at Bushy Park on the East Bank of Essequibo. Yesterday, the race started as normal at Wales proceeded to Leonora before the competitors returned, went into the new Parfait Harmonie Road to finish just before the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
Leal trumped the field as he sprinted home to win in One Hour 27 Minutes 02.98 Seconds, covering just around 30 miles or so.
Orville Hinds had to settle for the 2nd place while reigning National Junior Champion, Christopher Cornelius, just back from the Caribbean Junior Championships in St. Lucia, was 3rd overall and the first junior to cross the line.
Shaquel Agard (Linden Bauxite Flyers CC) was 4th with last year’s champion Michael Anthony and another of Leal’s teammates; Michael Anthony having to settle for 5th place with Ian ‘Deaf Boy’ Jackson closing out the top six places. Jackson was the winner of the veteran category.
Taking the runner-up spot among juniors was Raphael Leung and Jornel Yearwood both of whom also competed at the Caribbean Junior Championships.
Following Jackson to the line in the veteran class were Raymond Newton and Paul Choo Wee Nam in that order. Ruling the roost in the mountain bike race was Mahaica based Sean Budhan with the 2nd and 3rd place going to Keon Thomas and Stephan Gobin.
The respective category winners were all presented with Ricks and Sari hampers.
