…seeing him in the ICU was the most difficult part—says mother
The road to recovery has begun for Saint Lucian Cub Scout, eight-year-old Nick Omarie
Joseph. The child sustained life threatening injuries in an accident on Woolford Avenue on July 26, 2016. The driver of the vehicle has since been sentenced to 10 months in prison.
Delia Finistere, mother of the lad, told Kaieteur News that it has been a tough time seeing her son in the Intensive Care Unit unresponsive and there was nothing that she could do. She said it brought joy to her heart when she arrived on the morning and heard that he had been transferred to the Children’s Ward of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
From the time he was admitted she noted that he had to be fed through a tube, but on Saturday morning all the tubes were removed and he was being fed with spoon.
She says she is now leaving his full recovery in the hands of God.
Meanwhile, President David Granger who paid a visit to the lad and brought him a hamper has commended the good patient care by the medical team.
The cub’s mother, Ms. Delia Finistere, was at his bedside during the visit, along with neurosurgeon, Dr. Amarnauth Dukhi, who updated the President on the child’s progress.
The doctor said that the child is likely to be released from hospital early next week and can return to his native St. Lucia, the following week. “I have already made contact with the neurosurgeon in St. Lucia, who is going to follow up on his case, but he has made a fair recovery and we continue to monitor him closely,” Dr. Dukhi said.
Finistere extended gratitude to the President and his government for the kind gesture and services provided to her during her stay in Guyana.
It was on July 26 that Tracey Liverpool, who has since been jailed, drove up the one-way street to visit a school to register her child. Having been refused entry she became angry and drove off in a haste causing the accident.
She pleaded guilty to the offence in court.
Joseph and another scout, Darnell Ajani Matthew were injured in an accident on Woolford Avenue, Georgetown on July 26, during the Caribbean Cuboree, which was being hosted in Guyana. The latter was treated and released and has since returned to St. Lucia. His mother, Ms. Jacqueline Matthew, who is also a Scout Leader, has remained in Guyana to provide support to Joseph and his mother.
