– Additional training to be offered in Lethem
Limited Resource Teacher Training (LRTT), a charitable organization out of United Kingdom (UK)
yesterday issued certificates to 136 local teachers who participated in a one week workshop at School of the Nations.
The participants are from various schools around the country.
LRTT delivers in-service training to teachers in countries with limited resources. The program seeks to address the issue of low-quality teaching and learning, by providing a model of high-quality, low-cost teacher training.
Training is based on tested strategies which use international practice while considering local challenges and context.
Tom Gilbody, one of TRTT’s team leaders, explained that there are 22 volunteers in Guyana, 19 teachers and three team leaders (also teachers)—working along with local teachers and students in an effort to improve the education system.
A team departed Georgetown yesterday afternoon for Lethem where a one-week workshop will be held for teachers in that region.
Every year, during the summer holiday, professional teachers travel in groups to different countries to assist children and local teachers. This year, 160 teachers from the charitable organization are in eight countries, offering their help.
The countries that benefited are Guyana, Ghana, Uganda, India, Nepal, Cambodia, Rwanda
and Tanzania.
All the volunteers are professional teachers in their respective countries and they are mostly from the UK. “The project runs for four weeks. On summer vacation, they join the team and pay their own expense and if they cannot afford, they do fund rising,” Gilbody said.
To date, 30 schools have taken part in training, ranging across government schools and low-cost private schools at both the primary and secondary levels.
