– To be charged with DUI, causing death by dangerous driving
The man, who reportedly lost control of his vehicle two Sundays ago at Diamond, East Bank Demerara (EBD) in the vicinity of Distribution Services Limited (DSL) and caused the death of disc jockey (DJ) Wavel Sheik Sabsook, has not been charged as yet.
This is because he is still hospitalised, nursing burns he sustained to both feet when the vehicle he was driving, bearing registration number PVV 2009, exploded after crashing into a DSL’s sign board.
Traffic Chief Dion Moore said that while the driver remains in hospital, ranks are still investigating the matter.
As soon as the driver is discharged, he is likely to be charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and causing death by dangerous driving.
Sabsook, also called “Javid” and “DJ Bashment” of Grove, East Bank Demerara was hurled out of the vehicle onto the opposite side of the roadway.
The father of one was pronounced dead at the East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital. The driver, who has been identified only as “Shameer”, managed to get out of the car before it became enveloped in flames.
Kaieteur News understands that a breathalyzer test was done on the driver and revealed that his alcohol level was 103 microgrammes, which is way above the prescribed limit of 35 microgrammes.
According to information received, the DJ and his friend were returning home from a party in Georgetown when the accident occurred.
The driver, according to police sources, claimed that a car swerved in front of him, causing him to lose control of his vehicle. He said that because the road was wet, his vehicle skidded and toppled before it exploded.
However, traffic ranks who reviewed surveillance footage from cameras in close proximity to the scene observed no other car on the road at the time of the accident.
A cousin of Sabsook said that when he was informed of the accident, he went to the scene but police had already taken Sabsook to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre.
He said that a doctor at the medical institution informed him that both of the DJ’s feet were broken, one of his hands was broken and there was a gash on his head.
The relative said that from what he observed, the driver was indeed under the influence of alcohol.
For the year so far, 78 persons have been killed in accidents.
