Nineteen-year-old Leroy Bennett of Alness Village, Corentyne, Berbice on Friday fell some 45 feet to his death from the roof of the Ancient County Rice Mill at Tarlogie, Corentyne.
He was at the time doing routine maintenance work on some pipes.
Manager of the Rice Mill, Rameshwhar Chanilal, told Kaieteur News that Bennett was conducting his daily duties when he fell around 14:00 hrs.
He was picked up and rushed to the Port Mourant Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The police were subsequently called in and the mill was placed on locked down as an investigation was launched into the incident.
According to the teen’s mother, Cora Bennett, she recieved a call from her son’s boss who informed her that her son was taken to the Port Mourant Hospital after he fell about 30 feet off the roof and sustained no life threatening injuries.
Mrs. Bennett got the shock of her life when she arrived at the Hospital and was met with her son’s lifeless body on a stretcher.
“They tell me that my son was okay but when I go to the Hospital, I see me son dead.”
The young man was described as a jovial person who always had a willingness to help those in need.
Police investigations are ongoing.
