A very strong advocate in the fight against human trafficking, Minister within the Ministry of Social Protection, Simona Broomes, has pledged to make “Kaimos” a thing of the past,” very soon. “With this government and me in this Ministry we will remove the names kaimos”.
Addressing the gtathering at the culmination of a walk in Observance of World Trafficking Day , at D’urban Park, yesterday, Broomes said that the Government of Guyana will team up to implement four pillars to combat Trafficking in Persons.
These pillars are prevention, protection, partnership and prosecution.
Minster of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan, who acknowledged the work over the years by Minister Broomes and encouraged others to be like her, said that he intends to also target those night clubs that have been involved in ‘TIP’, ‘.
“What is happening now is that girls from overseas–Colombia, Haiti, and Costa Rica, are being brought here in some of the night clubs.”
United States Ambassador to Guyana, Perry Holloway, said that his country will continue to support Guyana’s efforts to eliminate human trafficking.
He said that Guyana has been working to eliminate the scourge. It is evident that it has moved from Tier 2 Watch List to Tier 2 List of the U.S State Department Report in Trafficking In Persons. He called on the Non Governmental Organizations, the private sector and all others to join in the continued fight.
United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon, has said that human trafficking is a “parasitic” crime that feeds on the vulnerable, thrives in times of uncertainty and profits from inaction.
He has called on Governments to ratify and implement the United Nations Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime and its protocols on trafficking and migrant smuggling.
