Cricket is expected to return to the Upper Corentyne area in a big way. This is through the kind courtesy of the NPG Packaging and Plastic Inc of Wellington Park, Corentyne, Berbice.
The multipurpose company has joined forces with the Upper Corentyne Cricket Association (UCCA) to sponsor one of the biggest 20/20 second division cricket competitions in Berbice.
The competition will involve some 21 teams from the Upper Corentyne area, spanning from No.43 Village to Crabwood Creek and will also include two teams from the Black Bush Polder area.
Speaking at a simple presentation ceremony done recently at the Hotel Riverton Suites, Proprietor of NPG Packaging and Plastic Mr. Surendra Ganesh said that his company is always happy to give back to the community which is part of their cooperate responsibility. He said that the Upper Corentyne area especially is part of his customer base.
He has full confidence in the ability of the UCCA to do a good job and is looking forward to the staging of an exciting tournament.
Mr. Dennis De Andrade President of the UCCA thanked Mr. Ganesh and his firm for coming on board with this much needed sponsorship. He mentioned that the competition serves to bring back the passion for cricket among youths.
The competition will start as soon as weather permits. The teams will be placed into four zones with the top two teams in each zone advancing to the knock out stages. The preliminary rounds will be played on a round robin basis on a home and away schedule.
Some 21 teams are expected to participate. The winner will receive $100,000 and a trophy whilst the runner up, third and fourth placed teams will all receive cash and trophies. There will also be cash and trophies for man of the match in the final and third place playoff.
