A West Berbice Cane harvester who in a fit of rage allegedly knifed his ex-lover to death, is on trial in the Berbice High Court on the charge of murder.
Shazam Khalil 23, of 53 Shieldstown, West Bank Berbice, is on trial before Justice Jo Ann Barlow and a mixed jury. He is accused of murdering Shazina Mohamed, 19, of Edinburgh Housing Scheme, East Bank Berbice. The woman was brutally stabbed on January 17, last year, outside a Chinese restaurant at Rosignol Village, West Bank Berbice.
Presenting the State’s case, attorney at law Stacy Goodings, told the court that on the day in question, the woman was ambushed and stabbed by the accused who then fled the scene.
The woman was picked up and rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital and was subsequently transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital where she succumbed.
The state called its first witness, Police Constable Orwin Barton, who testified that during the time of the incident he was stationed at the Blairmont Police Station. He was part of the anti-crime patrol.
He said that relative to a report of an alleged murder received, he and a squad of policemen journeyed to the home of the accused at Shieldstown where they arrested Khalil around 04:00 hrs on January 18, last year. Khalil reportedly showed the cops an injury he sustained to his eye during the altercation. The man was arrested and taken into custody and subsequently charged.
A voir dire is being held after defence counsel attorney at law Tajenarine Ramroop made some objections.
