Even with limited resources and more work being added to their platter, the police are not shirking from their responsibilities to tackle crime and other social ills that are plaguing the society, especially among the youths.
As such, the police in B Division in Berbice under Commander Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam have been launching Youth and Sports groups throughout Berbice in an effort to stay on top of the situation. The initiative also helps in crime fighting.
The latest group to be organized was done at Fyrish Corentyne, Berbice by Commander, Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam. He was accompanied by Officer in Charge of No.2 Sub Division, Deputy Superintendent Marlon Taylor and Community Relations Officer, Woman Inspector Margo Grosvenor.
The youth were spoken to by the senior officers in attendance and were told about the purpose, benefits and other importance of getting themselves organized and into groups.
They were told of the importance of having a sound education and the consequences of being involved in illicit activities, the bad effects of drugs, teenage pregnancy, being school drop outs and other social ills.
A number of sports gear and educational materials were promised to the youth by the police. The efforts are part of the Police Social Crime Prevention programme to get persons, especially youth involved in a positive lifestyle. (Samuel Whyte)
