Record Stand between Campbell & Toussaint power Guyana to win
– B’dos finish third
By Sean Devers
West Indies batter Shemaine Campbelle (70) and Lashuna Toussaint (63) added 147 for the second wicket and along with good bowling from off-spinner Plaffiana Millington and left-arm pacer Erva Giddings led Guyana to a 96-run consolation victory in the fifth place play-off of the WICB Regional Women’s t20 at Providence yesterday.
In the third place play off Barbados, led by an unfinished 81 second wicket stand between Player-of-the-Match Kycia Knight and Deandra Dottin galloped to 99-1 from 10.5 overs in reply to the 98-3 off 20 made by the Windwards.
In the opening game, Guyana lost Melanie Henry (1) who was bowled by the impressive 17-year-old Shawnisha Hector at 11-1 in the third over.
But Campbelle joined the fluent Toussaint and shared in the first century partnership of the tournament. Campbell played the supporting role before putting her foot on the gas and speeding past her correct looking partner.
The 23-year-old Campbelle who has been playing at the International level since she was a 16 year-old stroked seven fours and two sixes in her 53-ball unbeaten 70, while 21-year-old Toussaint reached the boundary five times in her run-a-ball 63 to see Guyana to 158-1 in 20 overs.
Shawnisha Hector continued to impress and bowled Melanie Henry (1) at 11-1 but this was to be the only success for the Leewards who were bundled out for 62 in 16.4 overs with only Amanda Edwards and Saneldo Willett, with 10 each getting double figures as the 18-year-old Millington (3-7 from 4 overs) and Giddings, Guyana’s leading wicket taker with nine scalps, had 2-14.
Campbell who finished with 184 runs, and Toussaint who registered her first half-century, joined forces to post a record West Indies female t20 147 runs in 17.5 overs on slow track and lush green outfield.
Campbelle and West Indies and Jamaican Captain Stafanie Taylor (165) are the only two batters to reach 100 runs and Campbelle played the supporting role to the fluent Toussaint in initial stages of their partnership.
Campbelle hit back-to-back boundaries off Sherma Jackson while Jenisen Richards bowled Campbelle a beamer and Toussaint miss-timed the free hit next ball and only managed a single.
Campbelle elegantly stroked Richards back past her ankles before dumping her for six over mid wicket in the 14th over which cost 15 runs.
Toussaint pulled Jackson behind square for four to post her 50 in the 16th over from 47 balls with five fours, before Campbelle, who has an ODI ton, reached her 50 from 40 balls with five fours and a six.
The Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club right hander, who came to prominence through Alistair Munroe’s Tapeball programme, put her foot on gas and dashed past Toussaint.
She launched into Hector and pulled her for four before hitting her down the ground for six in the penultimate over to register her second 50 in the competition in addition to her 45 not out against Barbados.
When the Leewards, who finished their debut tournament winless, began their reply the left-handed Eldora Sylvester give herself room and twice punched Giddings through and it was only due to lush outfield that both shots did not go for boundaries.
But she was soon bowled the Skipper Tremayne Smartt and when Sabrina Munroe bowled Edwards at 24-4 and Millington removed Willett, it was all over bar the shouting.
In the second match, Windwards won the toss and lost two wickets when Shakera Selman got rid of both openers to leave the score on 25-2. Medium pacer Seleman had Stacy Ann Adams caught behind for 11 and Glendeer Turin (9).
Skipper and West Indies player Afy Fletcher and Akeira Peters took the score to 87-3 with a patient partnership before Malissa Howard sent back Fletcher for a 30-ball 25 with three boundaries.
Peters’ acceleration towards the back end of the innings to end on 39 not out from 38 balls with three fours and a couple of sixes, was not enough to achieve a three-figure total or challenge the Bajans who seemed the most organized of the teams.
Hayley Matthews, the 18-year-old West Indies player who has not produced with the bat after her first match 27, was LBW to Rakel Williams for six at 18.
But the left-handed Knight and right-handed West Indies all-rounder Dottin took the attack to the bowlers and raced to 50 in the fifth over with Knight being the dominant partner despite her small stature.
They scored freely and counted 12 boundaries between them including an effortless six by Knight and only leg spinner Fletcher whose four overs cost just 17 runs escaped the flaying blades of the pair.
Knight was unbeaten on 47 with seven fours and a six from 36 balls and Dottin who smashed four fours in her 23 saw the ladies from Bim finish in the third position with 56 balls to spare.
