A group of protestors led by activist Lina Nageer, turned up in front of the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts yesterday morning to protest “backward” dress codes at government agencies and institutions.
The peaceful protestors numbered about six. They were armed with placards calling for the dress code policies at these places to be removed.
Some of the placards read “Down with patriarchal colonial dress codes”, “ My body, my money, my closet, my rules”, “ We want sentencing guidelines + justice – NOT DRESS CODES” among others.
In an invited comment, writer Akola Thompson said that she and the other individuals planned the protest to highlight the effects the dress code rules are having on the country. She said that the dress code policies at these places are not in keeping with modern times.
According to Thompson, the dress code policies at most of these places are harsh on women prohibiting them from entering with certain kinds of clothing. She said that just recently she was barred from entering the compound of the National Communication Network (NCN) because she was attired in a sleeveless top. She complained that despite NCN not having any dress code rules displayed, the security guards still denied her access.
Apart from protesting at the Court, Thompson said that they protested at the Office of the First Lady and at the Land Registry.
“The interesting thing about the Land Registry is that they barred us from taking a photograph of their dress code rules,” she pointed out.
Just recently President David Granger voiced his disagreement with some of the requirements outlined in the dress codes for entry into government buildings.
