Be wary of those you invite into your home.
That’s the warning from a senior police official, who is concerned by a recent spike in cases in which individuals deemed as guests turned out to be killers.
The most recent of these happened just last Thursday, and ended with 53-year-old Terry Lakhan being robbed, manually strangled and slung up by the neck in his wardrobe.
What police have learnt is that Lakhan, a Manager employed by Gafoor’s Limited, invited a labourer from his workplace to his Herstelling, East Bank Demerara home on Thursday night.
It is alleged that the labourer left after some time, and returned with another labourer, with whom he hatched a plan to rob and kill their ‘host.’
The men reportedly then strangled Lakhan, tied a length of rope around his neck, and slung him up in his wardrobe, to give the appearance of suicide. They then made off with two computers, an Xbox, clothing and other valuables.
But a woman living in the bottom flat was alerted by strange noises and on looking outside, saw one of the killers leaving hurriedly with a bag.
On checking Mr. Lakhan’s flat, she saw that the lights were off, the front door was open and a number of items appeared to be missing. She eventually found Lakhan’s nude body in his wardrobe.
The brazen killers reported for work next day, and were actually seen reading newspaper reports about the murder.
One man was later apprehended at his home and some of the stolen items were recovered.
But it was around mid-March that 60-year-old re-migrant
Anthony Breedy was found bound and battered to death in the lower flat of his house at Hill Foot, Soesdyke.
His home was ransacked, but there was no sign of forced entry to his residence. His Sports Utility Vehicle was also
missing. Investigations suggested that Breedy, who lived alone, had invited one of the killers into his home.
Police later apprehended and charged three men for Breedy’s murder.
Two months later, another re-migrant was slain in almost similar fashion while at home alone.
In May, the wife of 75-year-old retired professor Pairadeau Mars arrived home at night to find him slumped in a chair in the study of their Lot 395 Bissessar Street, Prashad Nagar residence.
His limbs were bound together with duct-tape, while duct-tape was also wrapped around his mouth.
A post mortem examination revealed that death was due to manual strangulation, compounded by multiple fractures to the head and face.
The day after his murder, police apprehended five youths, including two girls, for his murder. They have since been charged.
