A Berbice mother was yesterday charged with three counts of neglect of child when she appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore at the Sister’s Magistrates Court.
The 45-year-old woman pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The charge states that she willfully contributed to the neglect of her children, aged five, seven and ten, being in need of protective intervention, omitting to do so, whereby causing harm to the said children.
The woman, who is a domestic worker, was placed on $50,000 bail on each count. She was remanded after failing to post bail.
She is scheduled to return to court on August 18.
The stepfather of the victims, who is said to be the perpetrator, is scheduled to appear in court today.
Police Prosecutor, Inspector Phillip Sheriff had opposed bail due to the grievous nature of the offence.
However, Magistrate Moore argued that there were not enough grounds to remand the father of fourteen.
The alleged abuse came to light late last week after villagers found the three children on the Edinburgh seawall and alerted a Welfare Officer, who contacted the police. They allegedly stated that they were abused by a relative.
