Despite the numerous challenges that they face in terms of layout, the hinterland communities’ across the various regions in Guyana has once again demonstrated that even in the absence of much needed assistance, their embrace of sporting events organised within their respective communities remain strong.
This was confirmed during the staging of this year’s Digicel Schools Football Championship in every community that games were scheduled.
The support received over the duration of the tournament’s existence must have been a primary reason for the sponsor’s insistence of staging matches in those communities despite the enormous cost of doing so.
Many reasons have been proffered for the large turnout of fans at games with some claiming that due to the lack of activities the residents are always eager to attend organised sports, while the support for home teams is another explanation that is usually given.
However, after analysing the above mentioned reasons, one can’t help but conclude that the residents’ unmitigated support for sports must be borne out of pure love, judging from the wide cross section of persons that attend the events.
They include young, middle-aged and old and their love is demonstrated by the fact that the events become the talk of the town with every conversation centered on the game and residents urging each other not to miss it.
Digicel that has exhibited the fortitude to venture into such a huge undertaking must be encouraged by the support and general feedback it receives from these communities hence its persistence in returning every year not only to the same places, but even some that could be considered far flung in terms of location.
Every year the Company strives to involve a new community and this is commendable and in keeping with one of its mandates which is to expose participants in the tournament to the different settings and lifestyles of diverse communities.
Every community that hosted matches put on view their hospitable qualities, making the experience an unforgettable one, especially for those from the coastland.
The Championship is now in the homestretch with the national playoffs set to commence today, but there must be players, officials and residents from all across Guyana who might be wishing that it never ends.
The hinterland communities have staked a strong claim for continued and perhaps even more support for sports.
