Government has effectively created that enabling environment where close to 2000 indigenous youths will be able to realize their true potential from being exposed to best practices in capacity building through the ongoing Hinterland Employment and Youth Service (HEYS) Programme.
Capacity building is amongst several courses offered, where youths will be encouraged to channel their energies to improving their personal development which will assess their knowledge, skills and abilities which includes identifying their strengths, interests, challenges, team work and building trust.
The course also seeks to shape their interpersonal communication skill, work habits and conduct, leadership, making financially sound decisions and highlighting health and safety standards in the work place.
Minister within the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples, Valerie Garrido-Lowe, said that she remains resolute in ensuring the livelihoods of indigenous youths are immensely improved and only last week expressed satisfaction with the level of enthusiasm shown by the youths. She also has responsibility for youth development
Vice President and Minister of Indigenous People’s Affairs, Sydney Allicock, during the launch of the training for trainers programme in Region Nine, last month, also alluded to the fact that the government, and by extension the ministry, has resolved to bridge the divide between the coastland and the hinterland.
According to Minister Allicock the HEYS Programme is so designed to effectively execute this plan, and is encouraging every youth that is participating to take full advantage of this opportunity since it seeks to create sustainable job opportunities, while providing youths with skills to prepare them for the world of work.
The second phase of the HEYS Programme has been introduced in 106 villages throughout the hinterland.
