Pint sized Paige Fernandes provided Guyana with its first Gold Medal at the MAPLES
Caribbean Junior Squash Champs in the Cayman Islands yesterday after she beat Shaelah Parchment Henry from the host country 11-5 11-0 13-11 on Court 5 in the Girls U-13 category.
Shomari Wiltshire then joined her as gold medal winner when he successfully defended U-13 title in a later match yesterday. He defeated Darien Benn of Barbados 11-1, 11-2, 11-3 in straight games (3-0) for a comfortable victory.
Under-15 Kirsten Gomes failed to capture gold, having to settle for silver after she lost to Barbadian Sumairaa Suleman 14-12, 11-7, 11-2 in a competitive encounter.
The 2016 tournament, which commenced last Saturday and concludes this Saturday, saw Guyana dominate in the play-off with Paige winning the only final played in yesterday’s first session.
