Public Relations Officer Debra Lewis said that repairs to the Solid Waste Management Department building and the Municipal Abattoir are scheduled to begin in the near future.
These repairs come shortly after the Ministry of Social Protection’s Department of Labour, Occupational Safety and Health’s (LOSAH) investigation into various departments of City Hall.
LOSAH’s report highlighted the deplorable state of the Solid Waste Management’s building, the Concert Hall at City Hall and the Municipal Abattoir.
Lewis said that when the new administration took up office in City Hall, it observed the derelict state of the buildings and furniture. She noted that the administration subsequently moved to acquire new furniture and improved the conditions of most of the offices.
Lewis told this publication that the European Union (EU) has reopened bids for the restoration of City Hall. In May 2015, the EU had pledged its support in the restoration of City Hall, but that plan subsequently fell through.
Kaieteur News understands that the bidding process for the restoration of the Concert Hall and City Hall has already started and persons have already submitted bids.
The LOSAH department has given the M&CC a July 31 deadline to correct all breaches of Occupational Safety and Health regulations, and to improve working conditions at the departments that were highlighted in the LOSAH report.
