He is now 63 years old but ever since he was 53 Carlton ‘Cornman’ Stephenson has staged a one man
fitness run that commenced at the famed ‘Red Shop’ in Sophia and culminated at the 4 corner junction in Uitvlugt WCD.
Dubbed the ‘Emancipation Day Fitness Run’ Stephenson is set to perform the usual feat on August 1 next. With a physique that belies his age, ‘Cornman’ visited Kaieteur News’ Saffon Street office to launch the 10th edition of the 26 miles event and he is encouraging fellow fitness conscious individuals to join him.
Stephenson said that the objective of the event is to promote health and fitness while instigating mental, physical and spiritual development. He further explained that another batch of junior athletes will commence the race at the Lenora Track and Field athletic facility before proceeding to the finish at the Uitvlugt 4 corner junction. The winner of this event will receive a trophy and according to Stephenson any athlete winning the accolade three times in a row gets to keep it.
All athletes are invited to participate in the event and the organizer has assured that transportation will be provided. Those seeking further information and/or clarifications may contact ‘Cornman’ at telephone # 672-7322.
