Police in ‘B’ Division have detained the 40-year-old stepfather of the three sisters, aged 10, seven and four, who were allegedly sexually assaulted and then put out of their home.
The man was arrested at his East Bank Berbice home around 02.00 hrs yesterday.
Divisional Commander, Ian Amsterdam confirmed that the victims are still hospitalised.
An official from the Childcare and Protection Agency said that the children will be interviewed on Monday. The findings will be handed over to the police. Meanwhile, police can approach the court to detain the stepfather until the CPA investigation is complete.
If the evidence is there, he could be jailed for life under the Sexual Offences Act. The mother of the children is also likely to be charged under the Child Protection Act.
“If she needs help she will get help,” the official said.
The abuse came to light late last week after villagers found the alleged victims on the Edinburgh seawall and alerted a Welfare Officer, who contacted the police.
The victims disclosed that their stepfather raped them and then told them to leave their home. A medical examination reportedly revealed signs of sexual assault.
Police had detained the mother, who has 14 children, 11 of whom are girls.
Neighbours in the area disclosed that the victims suffered physical abuse at the hands of their step-father. They also mentioned that the girls were often left alone with the alleged abuser. One neighbour also claimed that the victims stated that the stepfather would pelt the girls with anything within his reach including ‘coconuts’.
Another resident, who tipped off welfare officials, said that the mother was very abusive to the children and neighbours.
“Them kids does be wandering around the people and you don’t see them eating nothing. If you (are to) give the kids them something to eat, she would cuss you up and tell yuh left them alone. You gotta hide and give them. Is sad though what happen cause them is pretty girls and very mannerly.”
Commander Amsterdam said that charges are likely to be instituted.
