A faulty connection that links the submarine cable across the Demerara River and overhead transmission lines in the city was the reason for a total shutdown in the Demerara area Tuesday night.
According to the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL), the power went down at approximately 23:09hrs Tuesday night for the entire Demerara Berbice Interconnected System.
The faulty connection or “Pot Head” is what links the 69KV submarine cable to the overhead transmission lines at Kingston. “While restoration efforts were hampered to a minimal extent, due to problems encountered while restarting some of the generating units at our Kingston plants, power was restored to most consumers by 02:30 hrs,” GPL said in a statement. However, as of yesterday, technicians were still working to restore power to the link to the Vreed-en-Hoop 26 MW Station, the company said. The shutdown had fortunately come after the CPL cricket match at the National Stadium, in which the Amazon Warriors came out triumphant.
