A Colombian was yesterday fined $30,000 with an alternative of four weeks’ imprisonment for overstaying her time in Guyana. The penalty was imposed by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Kareens Lorenca, between May 12 and July 11, 2016 at Georgetown, failed to comply with any conditions subject to which a permit is granted.
She was granted permission to stay in Guyana from March 11 to May 11, 2016 but overstayed the period.
Lorenca who was represented by Attorney Paul Fung-A-Fat told the court that she never intended to overstay. She explained that she made efforts to get an extension but her efforts proved futile. However, she stated that she is the holder of a five-year business visa for Guyana.
Magistrate McLennan advised Lorenca that she should have applied for the extension before the period had elapsed.
Police Corporal Deniro Jones represented the prosecution.
