According to Commissioner of “B” Division, Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam, at the end of June, crime decreased by nine per cent in the Berbice area.
Amsterdam at the time was speaking to the media after the Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) 177th Anniversary Awards ceremony.
He said that after the recent dismantling of a criminal gang, another gang had attempted a robbery but was thwarted by the police. He continued that the suspects were subsequently arrested and placed before the courts; the prosecution he noted was able to institute charges because they had sufficient evidence in the form of surveillance video footage.
He further said that there has been a decrease in all areas of crime in Berbice.
Following the shocking piracy attack during which four fishermen were murdered– 23-year-old Ramchan Latchman, 41-year-old Ganesh Naidoo, 53-year-old Ramesh Singh, 19-year-old Stephen Leon Leacock and Leon Lammy, 29, were all charged with the murder of 46-year-old Hemchand Sukdeo during the course of an act of piracy.
Amsterdam said that no additional murder charges were instituted as the file is still between the investigators and the DPP, asked whether or not the piracy was an act of revenge, the Commander said that there was no indication that it was an act of revenge.
In a closing statement Amsterdam highlighted that once residents are comfortable, living in peace and satisfied with the work of the police in the area, and it is reflected in the support and compliments of the Commissioner, then he is satisfied with the efforts of the “B” Division police.
