The Teams remaining in the Mayor’s Cup football championship will have one thing on their agenda, making it all the way to cash in on the Aruwai Resort of Bartica first prize and trophy. The battle for quarterfinal places will result in action on Sunday at the Victoria Ground on the East Coast of Demerara with a triple header starting from 5:00pm.
Play was originally set for the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground but due to the staging of a city competition and the weather, play had to be rescheduled from last weekend and is set for Sunday.
Opening play brings together Camptown and Uitvlugt, while at 7:00pm, Riddim Squad will challenge Eagles of Linden as they all seek places in the quarterfinals. The first quarterfinal game will be the nightcap at 9:00pm. Ann’s Grove will take on Cougars in that game which will see the winner march closer to the money round.
After Sunday’s action, more play has been fixed for next Friday, July 22 at the GFC ground with another triple header. Police oppose Pouderoyen, Santos battle Beavers and Western Tigers collide with Den Amstel.
Coordinator Lennox Arthur indicated that all the remaining action is set for the GFC ground with playing days fixed for July 24, 27 and 31 when the final and third place game will be contested.
At stake in the competition is the top prize of $700,000 and a trophy donated by Aruwai Resort. The second place team pockets $300,000 and the Ansa McAl trophy, while the third place team carts off $200,000 and the John Fernandes trophy. The fourth place finishers will receive $100,000 and the Ministry of State trophy. Ricks and Sari has also donated hampers which will go to the winning team, while tournament’s top goal scorer will get a three piece suite compliments of AH&L Kissoon Furniture Store.
Top Brandz of Broad and High Streets, distributors of Interstate vehicle batteries, is among the key sponsors on board assisting the tournament.
Apart from Aruwai Resort and Top Brandz, among others on board are: Ansa McAl, Minister of State Joe Harmon and his ministry, John Fernandes, Ricks and Sari and AH&L Kissoon.
