Kaieteur News grenade attack case… Police file still incomplete, advice being sought from DPP

Even after police have completed investigations into the grenade attack on Kaieteur News, they are yet to complete the case file and commence a Preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the matter for which three men are charged.
This disclosure was made yesterday by Police Prosecutor, Deniro Jones when the matter was called for the second time before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Jones indicated that ballistic report is still outstanding from his file. However, he explained that the report is completed but is yet to be filed
According to the prosecutor, the case file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice and no go-ahead has been given on whether to apply the Administration of Justice Act (AJA). If this Act is not applied the accused will not be required to enter pleas.
Alfie Garraway, 36, of Norton Street, Lodge, Georgetown; Janeil Howard, 20, of Lot 322 Section ‘C’ Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara and Leroy Williams, 25, of Lot 11 D’Urban Backlands, are accused of conspiring, together with other persons, to cause an explosion by way of grenade likely to endanger lives and cause damage to property.

The offence occurred on June 4, at Saffon Street, Charlestown, Georgetown.
Attorney Glenn Hanoman, who is representing Garraway, vented his frustration over the prolonging of the matter, and requested for his client to be released on bail. He argued that the prosecution is still unsure of their way forward.
Despite the attorney’s contention, the Chief Magistrate further remanded the men to prison.
The accused will make their next court appearance on July 15 when the matter will be called for reports and fixtures.
Shemar Wilson also known as ‘Abdue’ is still wanted by the police for questioning in relation to the grenade attack. He is 20 years of age and last known addresses have been given as 43 North Sophia and 51 West La Penitence, Georgetown.
