Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan yesterday sentenced a man to 18 months’ imprisonment after he admitted to breaking into a city store and stealing a quantity of items.
Michael Singh, 40, of 222 South Road, Georgetown, pleaded guilty to breaking into the Country Pride Ice Store located at Robb and King Streets, Georgetown, and stealing a quantity of ice bags, trolley wheels and a trolley all valuing $46,000. That incident occurred between June 4 and 6.
He further admitted that between June 28 and 29, he broke into the same store and stole a cooler and Lasco fan, all totaling $30,000. The items are the property Butch Parmanand.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones told the court that on June 4, the complainant secured his store and left for home leaving the ice bags, trolley wheel and trolley intact. Jones said that when Parmanand returned the following day he noticed that the northern door of the store was open and that the items were missing.
According to the Prosecutor, Parmanand reviewed CCTV footage from his store and saw Singh removing the articles.
In relation to the second charge, Jones told the court that on June 28, Parmanand secured his store and left for his residence leaving the items intact. He said that when the man returned to his business place the next day he found a three-foot hole in the western wall. Parmanand, Jones stated, reviewed CCTV footage from the store and again saw Singh removing the articles.
The matter was reported and investigations were carried out which led to Singh being arrested and charged.
Throughout the brief court hearing, the thief begged for leniency. He told the Magistrate that this was his first time in trouble with the law and that he had never been to prison before.
“A begging for mercy,” a remorseful Singh cried.
Parmanand who was present in court said that he has been operating his business since 1982 and that Singh had broken into his premises four times during last month.
Before passing sentence on Singh, Magistrate McLennan considered that he pleaded guilty at his first appearance and did not waste the court’s time.
