President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) and International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) Executive Committee member, Steve Ninvalle, will be attending an important meeting of that body’s executive committee next week. The meeting will take place at the Hyatt Hotel in Tashkent, Uzbekistan from July 14 to 17.
Ninvalle informed Kaieteur Sport that at the meeting the executive committee will discuss a number of issues including a progress report on the Rio Olympics, ratification of executive committee decisions, summarize activities for 2016 and 2017 and present a business plan for that period. AIBA had recently changed their constitution to include professional fighters competing in amateur tournaments including the Olympics and they will ensure all the modalities are in place for the new rules.
The GBA head further indicated that as the Caribbean representative on the world body, he will be pushing for additional programmes to benefit this region. On the cards is the push for the resuscitation of the Caribbean Boxing Association (CBA). This body has been defunct since 2008. However, Ninvalle along with several other regional heads including Stephen Jones of Jamaica, David ‘Shakes’ Christopher of St Lucia and Cathy Harper Hall of Barbados among others had pushed for activity in the Caribbean. To this end they had staged a big developmental meeting in 2015 along with other smaller events.
Ninvalle and his Caribbean counterparts will look for him to make their case for AIBA to make instrumental moves to ensure the restart of the CBA and to have development programmes that will see the sport and its fortunes grow in the Caribbean. This is Ninvalle’s second attendance of an AIBA executive meeting after being elected to serve in 2014. He had attended their last meeting in Qatar last year and had made some headway in getting the assistance of key players in the organisation to assist the region.
