A Linden man was yesterday sentenced to three years in jail after he admitted to having five grammes of cocaine in his possession.
Nester Singh, of Lot 875 Wismar Housing Scheme, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, and pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of the drug for trafficking, which carries a minimum mandatory sentence of three years.
The cocaine was allegedly found on Singh on July 4th, at the Stabroek Market.
According to Police Prosecutor, Deniro Jones, on the day in question, about 19:00hrs, police were on patrol duty at the Stabroek Market. They saw the defendant acting in a suspicious manner.
He further stated that the defendant was approached and searched by ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF). During the search they found a Ziploc plastic bag, containing small pieces of a white, rock-like substance, later confirmed to be cocaine.
The accused was later told of the offence and was charged. In addition to the jail sentence, Singh was fined $30,000.
