Minister of State Joseph Harmon is the new Patron of the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC), this was announced at a ceremony hosted by the club recently. The event was held to recognise the club’s top youth cricketers who excelled academically.
The ceremony was attended by several ministers of the coalition government including Nicolette Henry (Sports), Minister within the Ministry of Indigenous People Valerie Garrido-Lowe, Minister within the Ministry of Social Protection Keith Scott and Harmon himself.
Subsequently, Seon Greaves, who chaired the proceedings, gave detailed history of the club which was founded 1912. He added that the club has produced some of the most exciting players to have graced the game; such as the Christiani brothers, Lance Gibbs, Clive Lloyd, the late Roy Fredericks, Mark and Roger Harper, Berkley Gaskin, M. P. Fernandes, Fred Wills, Andrew Lyght, Colin Wiltshire, Lennox Hunte, Travis Dowlin and Keith Semple.
“It is worthy to mention that Shivnarine Chanderpaul started his career here at the age of 12. This rich tradition of excellence continues to this day with players like Trevon Griffith, Paul Wintz, Christopher Barnwell, Kevin Boodie and Keemo Paul continuing to represent the national teams with distinction and naturally contributing to West Indies Cricket.”
President of DCC, Alfred Mentore, said it is the interest of the club to select a Patron that is worthwhile and for this reason Harmon was the ideal person who can be a role model to the youngsters who frequent the club. “We at the Demerara Cricket Club see the Patron of the Club as a person of respectability, credibility, stature and care. I say that we have found these qualities and many more in the distinct personage of this person, who has graciously accepted our request for him to become Patron. These are the character that cricketers must have in order to excel,” he added.
The Min. of State succeeds the late Chancellor Aubrey Bishop. Harmon welcomed the initiative and promised to utilize the limited resources he has to aid in the development of the organisation.
Currently there is segregation among cricket stakeholders throughout the country, a point Harmon temporarily made mention of during his address. He urged them to work together for the development of the game.
Minister Henry lauded DCC for organising such a ceremony and congratulated the Patron who she believes will contribute toward the growth of the club.
Min. Henry stated that she is happy to see the involvement of so many young people at the club level because it is an investment in the future.
